Tradition and Education: for my brother

It is my brother's birthday tomorrow, Feb. 11th.

He sent me this article by David Brooks a week or so ago, and I have been too much taken with other things to think consecutively (as Stanley Cavell would say) about it.

I am almost ready to offer a few thoughts, by way of response, in something approaching presentable style.

In the meantime, have a read.

The last part of this article reminded me of some of the insights in The Abolition of Man by C.S. Lewis.

You can hardly open a periodical without coming across the statement that what our civilization needs is more 'drive', or dynamism, or self-sacrifice, or 'creativity'. In a sort of ghastly simplicity we remove the organ and demand the function. We make men without chests and expect of them virtue and enterprise. We laugh at honour and are shocked to find traitors in our midst. We castrate and bid the geldings be fruitful.

Me, too. I'll have something to say, tomorrow. Perhaps I am too careful to be a blogger. I'll take the risk.

Too careful to be a blogger? I think not.

Using the modern media of social communications does not mean you have to act like modern media professionals.
