Unbounded scientific genius

I saw this wire story on the Yahoo! news service. Get the lede:
Brain scans of teens with a history of aggressive bullying behavior suggest that they may actually get pleasure out of seeing someone else in pain, U.S. researchers said on Friday.

Thanks, O wise and powerful people of science.

Now if Blogger software could just scan the brains of people about to post in the comments box, and reject comments automatically, we might be getting somewhere. :)

I shudder to think of the misapplications of such technology, as I shudder to think of the technology that would be needed for oversight of such technology, and the technology that would in turn be needed to oversee the oversight technology...ad infinitum.

In sum, the (ascendant) technocracy frightens me!

At some point, our culture will have to face the fact that technology needs to be governed, and that this is always a human responsibility.

I am reminded of the old cant about mankind coming to administer things so well that the need for governance would disappear. This is the abolition of man. I am ceaselessly amazed at the fact that Cicero translated Aristotle's zoon politikon as animal socialis. Human society is essentially political, even though the mundanely political is not the horizon of man's existence. The civitas Dei is a civitas, and CHrist is King. The idea that the perfection of human existence is a-political or trans-political, is one of the most dangerous, indeed pernicious ideas with which Catholic thinkers have toyed and by which some of them have been infected, during the past 70 years.
